The moon is ready to be inhabited. The atmosphere is not breathable by humans so there will need to be containment and suitable living quarters for visitors.
Overview
This lesson will focus on adding objects from Core Content to quickly build. Tilesets will be introduced to show how to easily piece together a building.
Building a Glass Dome
The lunar community will need a way to breathe so it will be vital to build a glass dome promptly. An Inverted Sphere is a useful object in Core Content to encapsulate players inside a sphere and have transparency from the outside.
Add Inverted Sphere
Open the Core Content window. Search for inverted sphere and drag the Sphere – Inverted mesh into the scene window. Then move it to be in the center of the crater.
Scale the Sphere
Selected the Sphere – Inverted object in the Hierarchy and then open the Properties window. Set the Scale property to X300Y300Z300.
Add Bubble Material
With the sphere’s Properties window still open, set the Base Material property to Bubble material.
Adjust the Glass Dome
Resize and move the inverted sphere until it looks just right.
Building a Scifi Building
With the community now safe to travel inside the glass dome, it’s time to start making some buildings. In Core Content, there are tilesets that allow creators to construct finished looking products but with easy-to-use snapping.
Find the Sci-fi Tilesets
Open the Core Content window and expand the 3D Objects section. Then expand the Tilesets subsection and select the Sci-fi category.
There are many objects that can be used to build sci-fi buildings. There are templates of objects grouped together such as a working door.
Add the Scifi Building Template
From Core Content, drag and drop the Sci-fi Base 01 Template into the scene. This is an example of how creators can use tilesets to construct a building.
Constructing a Room
Now that there’s a main building, it’s time to make a room for yourself!
Find an Opening
There are a couple exterior doors that are suitable for expansion. Choose an opening for your room to branch out from.
Create a Group
In the Hierarchy, right click the Sci-fi Base 01 Template and select Deinstance Template. Right click Sci-fi Base 01 Template again and select New Group. Name the group Room 01.
Build a Room
Using the Sci-fi Tileset objects in the Core Content window, build a room. Make sure to add the objects to the new group Room 01 to keep the Hierarchy organized.
Snap to Grid
The tileset objects are scaled precisely to snap together like puzzle pieces. It is highly advised to enable Snap to Grid option when moving tileset objects so they can easily be connected. Snap to Grid option can be toggled with the G keyboard button and the Snap Size can be changed using the [ and ] keyboard button.
Summary
The moon base is looking a lot more liveable!
Core Content has a plethora of objects to make any environment feel like home. If you want, add some more objects like chairs, tables, or foliage to fill in the building.
Hello
I’m just at the stage in “Making a Home Base” where I build my own room. I’ve put one wall up and want to put another wall opposite. Is it possible to turn the wall through 180 degrees so that it is facing the correct direction?
Yes. First select the wall you want to turn so it becomes highlighted in the scene. You can enable Rotation mode by pressing “E” and it should display orbit widgets around the object that can be dragged to rotate the object in certain directions. You can also open the Properties window and change the object’s Rotation Z property to 180.
